Trailhead: Glacier Gorge Trailhead, Rocky Mountain National Park
Destination: Black Lake
Roundtrip: 9.6 miles
This was a fall day spent with my cousin Sara hiking to Black Lake. It starts from Glacier Gorge aka "My Favorite Trailhead" and makes it's way all the way to the junction for Sky Pond before veering off to the left and creating a world of it's own. You pass Mills Lake along the way - an immaculate alpine lake and destination in it's own right. The trek to Black Lake takes you through regrowth from a fire that happened years ago, a beautiful waterfall and almost every time I've been there - elk. Beautiful elk, chillin right on the trail.
I love this hike because you are able to make your way past so much beautiful scenery (I mean, that's not saying much - its Rocky we're talking about) like Mills Lake, Jewel Lake and Ribbon Falls. If you have never spent a true Fall day at the park, I suggest putting it on your list. There is nothing like the crisp mountain followed by a cider in town.
