A few weeks ago Ethan, Harrison and I packed up the car and headed towards Great Sand Dunes National Park. The park itself was amazing but my favorite part was when we found this gem of a campground to spend the night in.
It's just up the road from the park and offers you wonderful views of the valley below and the mountains all around.
It was supposed to be fairly chilly so the campground was pretty bare. We lucked out however and it felt like summer camping - only getting chilly as the sun went down. We were stoked!
This campground also offers a hike to Zapata Falls which we sadly didn't have time to do but I hear it's wonderful. If you're here in the prime camping months I would definitely get here early as it is bound to fill up fast.
To reach Zapata Falls Campground: From Highway 160, about 5 miles west of Blanca, turn north on Highway 150 and travel about 10.5 miles to BLM road 5415; turn east and travel another 2.5 miles to the campground entrance.
To reach the road to the campground from the Great Sand Dunes National Park, travel about 7 miles southwest on Highway 150.
